本機は、主に小物部品の平面を、往復直線運動するバイト（切削工具）によって加工する小型の形削り盤である。戻り行程では加工しない。1830年代にイギリスのナスミスが開発してから20年ほど経った頃のもので、本コレクションのうち形削り盤では最も古い機械である。

This small shaper is used primarily to cut the flat surface of small parts with a nibbler (cutting tool) by moving the bit forward and backward. It does not cut during the return stroke. This machine was made about 20 years after Nasmyth in England developed the shaping machine in the 1830s. This is the oldest shaper in our collection.
